Network Support Engineer
Basic Purpose:

The Network Support Engineer performs a variety duties related the reliable operation, augmentation, maintenance, and repair of the Bresnan network.   This person is experienced in troubleshooting Transport, Data, Voice and Cable networks.  They will be responsible for network acceptance of commercial customer services and production network deployments and will closely support Engineering Support personnel and NOC Analyst with trouble isolation and repair.  They will work with other departments providing operational input and expertise related to architecture, testing, and implementation.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Support the Network Operations Center, Network Engineering Support, Advanced Commercial Support and other Bresnan departments through enterprise networking subject matter expertise.  This includes TDM, Switched, TCP/IP, VoIP and Fiber networks.
  • Performs acceptance of new or changed customer and network implementations by validating “as designed” and “as built” configuration and documentation.  Responsible for ensuring that final designs documentation is 100% complete and stored in the appropriate location according to policy.
  • Responsible for verifying that the equipment and network configurations adhere to standard before production acceptance.  This includes validation continuity test results and verification of diversity and/or failover functionality.
  • Verifies that all alarming and performance management information available from network or CPE equipment is properly configured in the device as well as any network, element or performance management system.  Develops and perform failure simulations as part of network acceptance process to verify that our monitoring capabilities are operational.
  • Works with Advance Commercial Support personnel on new Commercial Customer service activations, testing and acceptance.
  • This person is responsible for the development of technical methods and procedures for network and service acceptance including equipment configurations, network configurations, design documentation and monitoring.
  • Evaluates network change initiatives to technical viability, service impact, back out plans and potential conflicts to mitigate risk and minimize service disruptions.

Required Qualifications:
  • BS / BA or equivalent work experience.
  • 10 + years of network architecture, configuration and engineering level experience with extensive exposure to industry best practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of and experience working with Layer 2 and 3 network designs and configurations.  This includes Cisco and Juniper routing equipment as well as large commercial Ethernet switches in Core, Aggregation and Customer Edge applications.  
  • Experience with routing protocols including, BGP, OSPF, IS-IS, IPv6, MPLS and Ethernet.
  • Personal and production computing experience including UNIX (various flavors), Databases, Microsoft Excel, Word and Visio.
  • Working knowledge of HFC (Hybrid Fiber Coax) broadband network architecture, CMTS, DOCSIS 1.x / 2.x and VOD (Video on Demand).  This includes a strong RF background.
  • Strong Working knowledge of Networking Architecture & OSI Model; e.g. TCP/IP, SONET and Ethernet.
  • Strong working knowledge of WDM, TDM, IPSEC, VPN’s, VLAN’s etc.
  • Working knowledge of OSS Framework and processes – related to TMN Model as well as monitoring protocols such as SNMP, Syslog and TL1.
  • Must have strong analytical problem solving capabilities.
